CAKE: a Mid Career Retrospective of Sculptor and Visual Artist Don Desper Opening on January 24 at 7pm
A protégé of Walker Hancock, Don Desper’s retrospective spans 35 years of accumulated sculpture, painting, drawing, writing and conceptual work.
New Rochelle, NY, January 24, 2009 --(PR.com)-- 3rd Rail Studio (New Rochelle, NY) is pleased to announce the upcoming Exhibition CAKE, a mid-career retrospective of Don Desper’s work.
Opening Reception: Saturday, January 24, 7pm - 9pm
Exhibition Dates: January 24 through April 18, 2009
Don Desper is known for his large bronze sculptures and representational reliefs of corporate giants. His National Sculptor Society scholarship at Lyme Academy of Fine Arts refined and trained an already inherent talent. Like many artists who will not limit their creativity, Desper has turned his focus at times from representation to abstraction, found art, music, conceptualism and poetry. Like a pendulum that needs breadth of arc, he searches for his next work, his next inspiration.
Writer Brian Przypek said “I’ve been to Mr. Desper’s studio several times now, and each time I have been there I have been impressed by the aura of works in progress, the very literal feeling of dynamic which permeates the room. He is working, and work is growth.”
Born in Walnut Creek, California, Desper studied at California State University and University of California at Santa Cruz before gaining the scholarship that brought him East to the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts. Other awards include the National Sculpture Society’s Young Sculptor Award in 1989. His success and many prestigious commissions (including the bust of William Finch at Bush Holly House in Greenwich, CT) have not stopped Desper from wading into new modes of creative expression. With the addition of poetry to his repertoire, the importance of language and semiotics on his visual work is emphasized.
The retrospective will include selected pieces from Postholes, Ladder of Success, Floor, Spoons, Seven Island, and Seven Seas as well as new work.
