Self Published Release Reveals an Author’s Struggle Deafness in a Hearing World
Growing Up Deaf explores Rose Pizzo’s life with deafness and how the challenges of hearing loss changed her.

Growing up with the loss of her hearing posed a great challenge for Rose who was raised in a hearing family. Having worked as a Data Entry Operator for several years, she describes her daily life as fun but with degree of difficulty and effort in it. She shares her stories in the book, Growing Up Deaf: Issues of Communication in a Hearing World.
Stories of being left out and ostracized, which sometimes make the spirit weak, are explored in detail and the author describes how she stood for herself by learning about her rights as a deaf person. Rose also explains that it is the ‘hearing’ people who have a problem with her being deaf, not her.
Growing Up Deaf is a self-published autobiographical book of a woman’s life and how she discovers that communication can become a quandary in everyday life. This is Rose’s story of a deaf person’s perspective as well as the perspective of the deaf culture.

About the Author
Rose grew up in Queens, New York. She attended P.S.47, a public school for the deaf in Manhattan, and then a hearing vocational high school. Like most Deaf people, she married a Deaf man, Vincent Pizzo. Vincent and Rose have three children and three grandchildren.
Rose worked for many years as a Data Entry operator. She has been an active member of the North Jersey Community Center for the Deaf (NJCCD) and its Women’s Auxiliary. Rose has been a Teacher’s Aide at the Fair Lawn Deaf Program for over twenty years and has taught American Sign Language(ASL) to hearing adults at the Fair Lawn Community School. In addition, Rose has welcomed interpreting students into the Deaf community, so they could improve their skills and become comfortable with Deaf adults.
