Three major college newspapers recently quoted private college consultant Michael Goran, Director of IvySelect College Consulting, on this year’s Early Admission and Early Decision trends.
In an article on Early Admission published in Harvard University’s The Crimson, Michael Goran of IvySelect points out the information gap regarding the early options. According to Goran, among high-income students, “there is almost universal awareness of an early process” while lower-income applicants lack information about this admissions opportunity.
Yet despite this gap, the number of early applicants to Ivy League and highly competitive schools continues to climb. Asked to comment on the 6.6% growth of Early Decision applicants to his alma mater, University of Pennsylvania for The Daily Pennsylvanian, Goran attributes the rise to “greater international awareness of Penn as well as a trend for students to apply early…in order to increase their chances of admission.”
In an interview with The Daily Northwestern about Northwestern University’s 14% increase in Early Decision applications, Goran sees a similar trend with expanded recognition for Northwestern as a “true national and international university” contributing to “its rise in applications.”
According to Goran, “Early Decision, Single Choice Early Action, and, in some cases, Early Action applications to Ivy League and Top Colleges can help students gain an edge in the admissions process, but it’s not for everyone. For Early Decision, you need to be 100% sure of your choice and for Early Action your applications have to be ready to meet the deadline.”
