The Biggest Career Mistake May be Not Having a Mentor

New research shows the power of mentors in driving career success.

New York, NY, April 03, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Ivy Exec has matched over 2,000 professionals with mentors.

About 90 percent of professionals who have mentors say they’ve made a positive difference in their careers. Of those executives who haven’t had a mentor, 88 percent agree one would boost their careers, according to a new survey from Ivy Exec.

Ivy Exec, a career resource company that has matched over 2,000 professionals with mentors so far, found that the biggest reasons people don’t have mentors is that their companies don’t have a formal program, or they don’t know how to approach potential mentors.

“My own great experiences with mentors when I launched my company prompted me to build Ivy Exec’s mentor network,” says Elena Bajic, CEO and founder of Ivy Exec. “No matter where you are in your career, a mentor can help you shorten your learning curve so you can continue to grow and explore opportunities. We make finding a mentor easy.”

In its survey of executives from a wide range of industries, Ivy Exec also found:

Almost 60% have had one or two mentors, and 40% have had three or more over their careers.

Most executives have informal mentors who are not affiliated with a program at their companies or schools.

Business strategy, decision making and work/life balance issues are the most common topics of mentoring sessions, with job search strategy and help with compensation or negotiation following closely behind.

Ivy Exec’s mentor network is a community-based program designed to provide career guidance to professionals who find themselves at a career crossroads. Ivy Exec mentors have at least 15 years of experience and volunteer to work one-on-one with protégés.
