Water-based inkjet inks are mainly used in thermal inkjet. While there are no volatile organic compounds (VOC) and generally low toxicity, the dry rate is slow on non-absorbent substrates. They require special coated media to optimize drying and dot gain, as well as lamination to achieve water resistance. They were developed originally for desktop systems, but helped pioneer the growth of inkjet in wide-format graphics. There is limited usage in paper applications, i.e., commercial printing, labels, card, and boxes.
