PKS Kids Announces 2nd Annual Charity Bike Run Event: Proceeds Will Support Children with Rare Genetic Disorder

Islip Terrace, NY, September 02, 2008 --(PR.com)-- PKS Kids (www.pkskids.net) today announced their 2nd Annual Charity Bike Run in support of children with a rare chromosomal disorder, Pallister-Killian Syndrome (PKS). The event will be held on Saturday September 6th, 2008 at 12:00 pm (rain date September 7, 2008) at the Double R Bar, 24 Lowell Avenue. For more event detail and information, log on to www.PKSBikeRun.com.

This year’s bike run will be followed by an after-party at 1:00 pm at the finish line at Eastern Athletics 9A Montauk Highway in Bluepoint, NY, and will include refreshments, entertainment, raffles, and auctions.

Currently, there are approximately 200 diagnosed PKS cases worldwide with five in the New York metropolitan area (two on Long Island). Pallister-Killian Syndrome is a rare chromosomal abnormality caused when a tetrasomy of the short arm of chromosome 12 occurs. Major symptoms may include anatomical abnormalities, mental retardation, loss of muscle tone, and streaks of skin lacking color. PKS was first identified by Philip Pallister in 1977 and further explored by Maria Teschler-Nicola and W. Killian in 1981.

Last year’s inaugural PKS Bike Run raised over $15,000, with 100% of the proceeds going towards education and support for PKS children and their families.

“Last year, the PKS Bike Run demonstrated how a community can rally behind a worthy cause; many people volunteered their time, services and money,” said Michael Zane, PKS Kids co-founder and vice chairperson. “Our ongoing mission is to continue to ensure that the medical community is able to properly diagnose children who have Pallister Killian Syndrome and help the affected families who need assistance.”
