New Interactive Children’s Book Instills Life Skills; Authors to Donate 50 Percent of Royalties to Charity

Pittsburgh, PA, August 31, 2008 --(PR.com)-- In a world where self-worth is often defined solely in monetary terms, it’s not easy these days teaching children to become caring and responsible adults. But a beautifully illustrated new children’s book is offering parents and teachers a secret weapon in the effort to instill important life skills—and become better people in the process.

Just published by Books for Living , “Daddy, What Is Success?” from authors Richard A. Singer Jr., Helen Thomas and Joseph Betty, helps establish the foundational principles that experts agree form the bedrock for a child’s future happiness and achievement: from recognizing the importance of equality and being willing to share, to seizing on their inherent potential and helping others.

The book’s message starts with a homework assignment. When Kaitlyn and Emily are asked to write about their meaning of the word “success,” they ask the other kids at their school. The answers—to have the nicest clothes or biggest pile of money—don’t satisfy them, so they ask their dad.

What follows are eight secrets “that will make you the best big person you can be,” the kids are told. Presented in an engaging rhyme format, these secrets encourage children to live each day to the fullest, and are sure to get them thinking beyond themselves and recognize the value of caring. Children will learn why everyone is created equal; how sharing increases everyone’s happiness; why money isn’t the goal of life and much, much more.

But “Daddy” doesn’t stop there. Following each secret is a list of interactive parent/child questions designed to spur discussion. For instance, the questions that follow secret No. 2¾which encourages helping others¾asks children what they will do to help someone; another asks how they might receive help themselves. Each secret is also expressively illustrated in vibrant full-color, and questions throughout the book encourage children to come up with their own stories describing what is happening in the pictures.

“This book...was inspired by the divinity we observed in our own children and it is written for each and every child that inhabits this Earth,” the authors state in their introduction. “The purpose of this book is to provide children with the foundational principles for successful living.”

And now parents and teachers can spread the goodwill even further. Fifty percent of all royalties from book sales will go to benefit six nonprofit organizations: The Make A Wish Foundation, the Damon and Stella Foundation for Mental Health, Elton John's Aids foundation, Indra Loka Animal Sanctuary, Scholarship Fund for Choices Drug and Alcohol Treatment center and the American Cancer Society. It’s all part of the Million Dollar Run, co-author Richard Singer’s charity effort to break a 27-year-old world record by traveling on foot from Los Angeles to New York City.
