Dr Lang one of four new directors joining Royal Scottish National Orchestra Board.

Glasgow, United Kingdom, September 04, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Dr Brian Lang is the new Chair of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO), following the Society’s Annual General Meeting on Friday 22 August. His arrival is accompanied by the appointment of three external Directors, Dorothy Lowry, Keith Cochrane and Stephen Carter OBE. In addition, it is intended that Michael O’Neill OBE will be co-opted to the Board of Directors in October 2008.

Brian Lang has been Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of St Andrews since January 2001, leading the institution through a highly successful period of change and growth, and firmly establishing its position in the top five of the UK’s universities. He is currently Deputy Chair of the National Heritage Memorial Fund (and Chair of the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Committee for Scotland), and a member of Council, St Leonards School, St Andrews. In 2004-5 he was a member of the Scottish Executive’s Cultural Commission, and in 2006 was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

Stephen Carter OBE has been in the hospitality industry for over thirty-five years and is currently Managing Director of one of Scotland’s best-located destinations, Cameron House Resort on the banks of Loch Lomond. He is also Chairman of The Hospitality Industry Trust Scotland.

Keith Cochrane has been Group Finance Director, The Weir Group PLC, since 2006. He was formerly Director of Group Finance with ScottishPower, and has extensive experience of international business.

Dorothy Lowry is Managing Director, People for the Corporate Division of the HBOS group. A human resources professional, she worked in retailing, financial services and a leading law firm before joining the Bank of Scotland in 1998.

Michael O’Neill OBE is the former Director of Education for North Lanarkshire Council, President of the Association of Directors of Education Scotland and a former member of the National Qualifications steering group.

The appointments to the RSNO Board of Directors replace previous Chair Tom Thomson, Vice-Chair Rosaleen Gillespie, Colin Buchan, Professor Fiona Gilbert and David Nish, all of whom joined in 2002 and who have helped guide Scotland’s national orchestra through one of the most successful periods in the organisation’s recent history.

New RSNO Chair Dr Brian Lang commented: "I am delighted to be taking over as Chair of Scotland’s national orchestra, and am particularly pleased to be joined by such a strong line-up of new directors at this time.

“The Royal Scottish National Orchestra is performing magnificently. The Board will be doing all in its power to support the orchestra and we are proud to be representing the nation during a period when Scotland's contribution to culture and the arts is being highlighted."
