New Guidance Document Offers Strategy for Remediation of Perchlorate in Groundwater

Raleigh, NC, September 09, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Solutions-IES, Inc., a leading provider of professional environmental engineering and remediation services for government and commercial clients around the world, in association with the Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP), announces the publication and release of a guidance document for Monitored Natural Attenuation (MNA) of Perchlorate entitled “Natural Attenuation of Perchlorate in Groundwater: Processes, Tools and Monitoring Techniques”.

MNA is one of several strategies that can be used to manage and remediate perchlorate in groundwater. This report presents a tiered approach to assist environmental professionals in determining the applicability of using natural attenuation as a remedial option. Tier 1: Plume Stability and Geometry, describes how changes in the spatial and temporal distribution of perchlorate can be used to evaluate the mechanisms of attenuation including bioremediation, dilution, and dispersion. Tier 2: Bio-Geochemical Conditions, describes how a bio-geochemical profile of an aquifer can be used to determine if site conditions are conducive for sustaining and promoting the activity of perchlorate-reducing microbial populations. Tier 3: Microbiological Indicators, describes innovative tools that can be used in the field and laboratory to provide direct evidence of perchlorate biodegradation. The evidence obtained via this tiered process can identify sites where perchlorate MNA is safe, effective and protective of human and environmental health.

Solutions-IES has also authored the 2006 ESTCP “Protocol for Enhanced In Situ Bioremediation Using Emulsified Edible Oil” for ESTCP and co-authored the “Protocol for In Situ Bioremediation of Chlorinated Solvents Using Edible Oils” for the Air Force Center for Engineering and the Environment (AFCEE) in 2007.
