Charleston Architect to Serve on Tennessee Design Awards Jury

Charleston, SC, September 12, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Whitney Powers, AIA, principal and president of Studio A Architecture in Charleston, will serve as a juror for the 2008 AIA East Tennessee Design Awards program, to be held in Charleston on October 11.

Powers, an award-winning architect and LEED-certified practitioner, has received national recognition for her work in sustainable, or green, contemporary design. One of her “green” residential designs – a vacation home on Dewee’s Island – was recently featured on HGTV’s “Extreme Living” show.

Powers also brings expertise in historic preservation to the jury. She has been responsible for the rehabilitation and adaptive reuse of many historic structures in South Carolina. This spring she converted the 1802 Anderson House in downtown Charleston into office space for the Medical University of South Carolina’s College of Pharmacy.

Other Charleston-based jurors for the awards program include Ray Huff of Huff+Gooden Architects, Reggie Gibson of Gibson Thompson Guess Architects, and Michael Maher of Charleston’s Civic Design Center, an urban design initiative.

Entries in the awards program are allowed in four categories: New Construction, Renovation/Restoration, Architectural Interior Design, and Young Architects Merit Award.

The East Tennessee chapter of the American Institute of Architects represents 17 counties in eastern Tennessee. It was chartered in 1953 and now includes 200 members.
