Re-Visit the Vietnam War Through the Eyes of a Young Infantry Lieutenant

St. Louis, MO, September 15, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Outskirts Press author Ivan N. Pierce presents his memoir, An Infantry Lieutenant’s Vietnam, which offers a personal and unique perspective of this controversial war. Pierce shares memories of his tour of duty as a young officer in the 4th Infantry Division, leading ground troops into combat in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. This is a journey that begins in jungle training and ends with the lieutenant’s eventual return home.

Excerpt from An Infantry Lieutenant’s Vietnam:

Death came early in my Vietnam experience, arriving during my last week of training. Death visited me many times. … As a ghost in the night, as a wasp sting from an unseen sniper, in a violent explosion … or as a welcome friend when the rigors of war, wounds, and pain became too intense.

Pierce offers a refreshing style—an informal, conversational style that belies the trauma and emotional stress running in a strong current just under the surface. At one point, the young lieutenant casually mentions calling in artillery fire that caused the death of several South Vietnamese soldiers, but the astute reader will pick up on hints of post traumatic stress lurking beneath Pierce’s nonchalant account.

Major General (Ret.) Thomas P. Lynch calls An Infantry Lieutenant’s Vietnam “a factual account of the Vietnam war, with a whole different perspective.” Accompanied by photographs and illustrations, this memoir is the definitive tale of the Vietnam experience, and is a must-read for anyone with an interest or a personal stake in that war.
