Venice, FL, September 22, 2008 --(PR.com)-- What Does 7 Juniors Plus 5 Sophomores Equal?

Venice Girls High School Volleyball at its best and getting better. The Venice Volleyball team is 7 and 3 after their first 10 games winning 23 games and losing only 11. This past week the Lady Indians traveled to Gainesville to defend their 2007 title only to lose to Tampa Berkeley Preparatory School in 5 games which was ranked 59th nationally by prepvolleyball.com in the final game. The lady Indians led in the fifth game 12-8 but Berkeley Prep came back to win the Gator Town Girl Volleyball Classic 26-24, 22-25, 22-25, 25-19, 16-14.

“It’s absolutely night and day,” Wheatley said. “To go 4-1 in a prestigious tournament like this is fantastic. We’re going to see Berkeley again. I just told the kids that when they drive into Venice tonight, they’re a different team.”

On Tuesday Venice Volleyball hosted the undefeated divisional rival Manatee High School Volleyball team, Venice won in 5 games defeating Manatee 20-25, 25-10, 19-25, 25-9, 15-8.

Venice was down 2 sets to 1 starting the fourth but the trio of juniors Dorothy Rahal, Emily Daniels and Jillian Allen with excellent passing from junior Taylor Capasso, who had 52 assists, rallied and led the Indians to their 53rd consecutive home victory at the Teepee.

“Good teams find a way to win when they don’t have their best stuff,” said Venice coach Brian Wheatley, whose team went 1-2 in three five-set matches over a five-day span. “This is the worst match we’ve played all year. When we settled down, we were fine.”

“On paper, Manatee has experience, seniors, height and athleticism,” Wheatley said. “What paper doesn’t show is the size of a team’s heart.”

Friday September 18th Venice traveled to Tallahassee to play the undefeated Leon High School, the state runners-up a season ago in the competitive Class 5A field. The Venice Indians lost in 4 games after winning the first game 29-27. Venice High School which won the Class 5A state title in 2005 lost the next three to Leon, the state runners-up a season ago, 25-21, 25-20 and 25-20.

“We were in every single game as the scores were 18-18 and 17-17,” Venice head coach Brian Wheatley said. “We fought hard in the first game, but we did not do that in the last three games. We limped to the finish. It was a good match, but I would like to see a better job of trying to finish.”

The Venice Volleyball is undefeated in its division with 4 wins and only 3 games left to play in its division. Next week Venice Volleyball team travels to Port Charlotte High School (Sept 22) and Charlotte High School (Sept 24) for two divisional games before hosting Southeast High School (Oct 7) at the Teepee for their final divisional match of the season.

The Venice Volleyball team will also be in Tampa the weekend of Sept 26 playing in the prestigious Berkeley Premier volleyball tournament.
