WCBU 89.9, StoryCorps and Metro Centre Serve Up Delicious Stories and Mouth-Watering Treats from Peoria-Area Restaurants at “Taste of Stories”
Peoria, IL, October 02, 2008 --(PR.com)-- October 4th fundraiser for WCBU 88.9 celebrates StoryCorps Peoria arrival
It's going to be a day of oral history and mouth-watering delights. WCBU is proud to welcome StoryCorps to Peoria’s very own Metro Centre for the “Taste of Stories” Saturday, October 4th 2008. The festivities will open to the public at noon and continue until 6:00 pm at Metro Centre located at 4700 N. University St. at Glen Ave.
"The StoryCorps project is really amazing," said Metro Centre's Eric Brinker. "It's really a once-in-a-lifetime chance to hear master story tellers live, and to make your personal story live on in history. And we think the food will be pretty unforgettable, too."
Local restaurants, including Apple Blossom Farm, Basta’s in Peoria Heights, Dixon’s Seafood Shoppe, Jane’s Ice Box, Naturally Yours, Nick-N-Willy’s, Pottstown Meat & Deli, Trefzger’s and Peoria Farmer’s Market at Metro Centre will be serving Peoria favorites all afternoon.
Free trolley rides will give visitors the special opportunity to hear tales told by well-known storytellers Oba King, Patti Erwin, Amy Kelly, and Brian Fox. Tyler Ziegel will move audiences with his personal story about his service in Iraq. A Performance by the Bradley University Jazz Ensemble is guaranteed to keep toes tapping and hands clapping. Audiences can also enjoy the talents of Sharon Samuel Reed & Friends, Taunya Jenkins & friends, and Lee Wenger.
StoryCorps, and independent nonprofit project, has been helping people all over the country celebrate one another’s lives by collecting memories and family tales. The stories of those who reserved a time slot at the event will be recorded and cataloged at the National Library of Congress.
“Metro Centre has a storied 35-year history as a community hub in Peoria” says Brinker. “ Now we’re adding a new chapter by hosting StoryCorps and the Taste of Stories event.” “I couldn’t be prouder that The Metro Centre is hosting this event in partnership with WCBU. If you look at our logo, it says 'Only in Peoria.' That holds true for this shopping center, and it holds true for this event.”
At “Taste of Stories” children will find plenty of activities just for them, including a ninja obstacle course, a 16 ft. slide and a colorful castle jumper, as well as crafts, clowns, and face painters. Storytellers will provide entertainment that is both fun and educational.
“The “Taste of Stories” provides a rare opportunity for the community to celebrate their history, their common ground and to help support WCBU” said Betty Beard, WCBU Membership Manager. "It's a chance for Peoria to come together and celebrate Peoria."
Admission to the event is free, and food tickets can be purchased on-site. A portion of proceeds benefit WCBU. For a complete schedule of the event, please visit metrocentre.com/storycorps.
Metro Centre has been close to the heart of Peoria for more than 30 years. Metro Centre stores are still locally owned and operated. The shopping center has remained a fixture in Peoria thanks to a focus on the community, friendly faces behind the registers, the unique selection of stores and a commitment to friendly, personal service.
StoryCorps is an independent nonprofit project whose mission is to honor and celebrate one another’s lives through listening. It is a project of Sound Portraits Productions in partnership with the Library of Congress, NPR, and public radio stations nationwide.
WCBU/89.9 is operated by Bradley University and serves central Illinois listeners in 20 counties with a 24-hour schedule of NPR News and classical music as well as popular public radio programs such as Morning Edition, Day to Day, All Things Considered, Prairie Home Companion, Car Talk, Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me and others.
