Pasadena, CA, October 08, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Pacific Oaks College will present a special screening of the Emmy Award-winning PBS documentary film, Where Do The Children Play? and host a discussion of the film with author Elizabeth Goodenough and Academy Award-winning filmmaker and USC faculty member, Mark Harris.

The event, which is free and open to the general public, is on Thursday, October 30, 2008, at 5:00 p.m. at Pacific Oaks College’s Eureka Campus, 45 Eureka Street, Pasadena, CA 91103. (Reservations: dfields@pacificoaks.edu).

Where Do the Children Play? is a one-hour PBS documentary about the vital importance of open-ended creative play for the healthy development of children. The film examines how restrictive patterns of sprawl, congestion, and endless suburban development across America are depriving children of outdoor play spaces that are so vital for children’s imagination, health, and well-being.

The documentary film was inspired by Elizabeth Goodenough’s book, Secret Spaces of Childhood. Goodenough, a scholar in the emerging field of children’s studies, noted that time outside school was increasingly filled with adult organized activities and indoor screen time. Children no longer had the space or opportunity to organize their own play or discover their own secret spaces. Goodenough has also edited a companion guide to the film, "A Place for Play" (University of Michigan Press, 2008), with photos, articles, and children’s poetry that evoke the creative but elusive qualities of play.
