Founded in 1628 and family owned for six generations, Lammsbräu has pioneered organic beer making. Townspeople of rural Neumarkt, a romantic hamlet in Germany’s Bavaria region, have been enjoying Lammsbräu since 1628. Lammsbräu beers have always been pure and flavorful, brewed in accordance with the Bavarian purity law of 1516. This tradition continued until 1977, when sixth generation brewery owner Dr. Franz Ehrnsperger, a pioneer of the German organic movement, wanted more than just to continue to brew beer in the customary way. A staunch opponent of GMO and strong believer in sustainable production methods and organic farming, he proclaimed Protection of the Environment a company goal, shortly after taking over the helm of the company from his parents.
In the following years, he consequently transformed the brewery into a fully sustainable enterprise. “We created the ten commandments of ecological beer brewing” says Dr. Ehrnsperger, “a set of rules everybody in our brewery is committed to”. All ingredients are sourced from local farmer’s cooperatives which produce grain and hops in accordance with the American and European organic standards. The water is pristine, drawn from the brewery’s own deep well. The company has solar panels for energy production. Packing materials and stationery are made from recycled paper, while delivery trucks are fueled by cold pressed vegetable oil. Even the brewer waste, often dumped by conventional breweries, is sustainably utilized as growing medium for organic mushrooms, cultivated in the dark cellars of the brewery. In 1992, Lammsbräu became the first certified organic brewery in Europe and remains one of the very few breweries in the world to exclusively produce organic beers. Dr. Ehrnsperger’s visionary work was awarded with the German Environmental Award in 2001, granted by Germany’s Federal Environment Foundation DBU.
