The National Association of Minority and Women Owned Law Firms (NAMWOLF) has announced the recipients of its Annual Diversity Initiative Achievement Award and Annual Award for Outstanding Service by a Council Member. These two top honors will be awarded at NAMWOLF’s Annual Meeting and Law Firm Expo at the Marriott – Dallas Las Colinas Hotel on November 13-14.
“Each year, we are pleased to honor members of our organization that have exceeded expectations in promoting diversity in the legal community within their corporations and law firms,” said Yolanda Coly, managing director. “This year we are able to recognize two partners that have worked hard to achieve their diversity goals.”
NAMWOLF Annual Diversity Initiative Achievement Award
Each year, NAMWOLF recognizes a corporate partner or public entity partner for their commitment to increasing diversity in the legal profession, mainly through utilization of minority- and women-owned law firms. This year, NAMWOLF is pleased to award Cleveland-based KeyCorp, the holding company for KeyBank National Association that provides various banking services to individual, corporate, and institutional clients in the United States, with the Diversity Initiative Achievement Award. KeyCorp has been recognized by Business Ethics Magazine for its diversity and was named one of DiversityInc magazine’s “Top 50” companies for CEO commitment, communications, supplier diversity, work/life balance and mentoring.
KeyCorp’s workforce, leadership and business reflect the diversity of its customers and communities. It has achieved this through the creation of targeted recruitment practices and the development of top talent that blends participation of women and minorities into the management of its business. In addition, the company is creating a culture of economic inclusion by incorporating a vast array of diverse suppliers and building wealth in the communities they serve by providing open opportunities and fair competition.
“KeyCorp firmly supports expanding relationships with diverse law firms, and as such, we have been a proud partner of NAMWOLF since 2004,” said Paul Harris, Executive Vice President, Secretary and General Counsel for KeyCorp. “We have been and continue to be committed to developing and facilitating strategic relationships with minority and women-owned businesses, thus reflecting our commitment to the communities we serve, our clients and our shareholders. We are truly honored to be recognized for that commitment by NAMWOLF,” he added.
NAMWOLF Annual Award for Outstanding Service by a Council Member
The Annual Award for Outstanding Service by a Council Member recognizes an Advisory Council member for outstanding achievement in increasing minority- and women-owned law firm participation in NAMWOLF and also for demonstrating dedication and commitment to NAMWOLF.
This year, NAMWOLF is pleased to honor Joel Stern, Accenture’s associate general counsel, director of legal services, with this award. Accenture is a global management consulting, technology services and outsourcing company.
Stern, who has been an active member of NAMWOLF since 2004, is responsible for leading a team who provide legal and contract support in the United States, Canada and Latin America. He is also the Global Operations legal lead for Accenture and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Accenture Foundation. Stern has personally led several diversity initiatives within Accenture’s legal group, including surveying and meeting with Accenture’s outside counsel to assess their commitment to diversity and inclusion and developing a high school mentoring program. Additionally, he has developed strong relationships with a number of NAMWOLF law firms as part of Accenture’s effort to dedicate at least five percent of its outside counsel spend with NAMWOLF firms.
“This award is clearly an acknowledgement of the tremendous passion and efforts of so many, both in our legal group and across Accenture,” said Stern. “We constantly look for new ways to create an inclusive culture, which we believe strengthens our ability to deliver high performance to our clients.”
Stern’s commitment to diversity has helped Accenture win numerous awards, including NAMWOLF’s “Annual Diversity Initiative Achievement Award” in 2005 and 2007 and the Minority Corporate Counsel Association’s "Employer of Choice Award" in 2007.
“KeyCorp and Joel Stern truly exemplify the very principles of our organization,” said Coly. “Their dedication to expanding diversity in the legal industry is what makes NAMWOLF and our initiatives a success.”
