Local San Diego Man Fighting Cancer, with a Kayak? Devoted Kayaker Pledges to Paddle for Six-Weeks to Raise Money for Cancer
With October officially Breast Cancer Awareness Month, one man decided to take action to raise money to end cancer, by kayaking for six weeks straight.
San Diego, CA, October 12, 2008 --(PR.com)-- October is officially Breast Cancer Awareness month, which has been created to help raise awareness of breast cancer and other cancer issues. With over 10 million people diagnosed or living with cancer in the United States (www.cancer.org, 2004), most of us either know a loved one with cancer or will in our lifetime.
One local Vista man, 62-year old Bob Wilson, a San Diego County sheriff for 20 years and co-owner of Fitness Together in Rancho Bernardo and Escondido, has been affected by cancer all too much. After his mother died of pancreatic cancer, and then recently his mother-in-law was diagnosed with lung cancer, he decided to do something about it.
An avid kayaker of ten years, Wilson has taken numerous kayak trips and loves the sport, but has always wanted to challenge himself with a long trip. It was then he got the idea to combine the two things he was passionate about, seeing a cure for cancer and kayaking.
“I wanted to raise money for cancer, but wasn’t sure what I could do, then got the idea to raise money by kayaking,” explains Wilson. “Other sports, like running or walking do it, so why is kayaking any different?” Wilson has planned a six-week kayak trip from San Diego to Baja, over 1,200 miles and about 8-12 hours in the kayak per day, that will take place in May of 2009, all to raise money to see cancer come to an end.
Wilson plans to have individuals or companies sponsor him per mile, even as small as 10 cents per mile. “A sponsor pledging 10 cents per mile, or $120 for the entire trip, may not seem like much, but if you take that over hundreds of people, we can really have an impact.” Wilson also wants to make quite clear that any pledges he receives will go completely to stopping cancer, and not a penny to the costs of his trip. “I am passionate about seeing an end to cancer, and feel privilegded to be able to do what I love to raise money to see that happen.”
