Ian Woosnam Finishes Second at Lake Garda
Forgan’s Ian Woosnam finishes the Lake Garda Italian Seniors Open tied second with England’s Gordon J. Brand on 12-under par – one shot behind winner Peter Mitchell.
Birmingham, United Kingdom, October 15, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Woosnam increases his lead on the top-spot of the Order of Merit by €30,000 ahead of closest rival Bernhard Langer with one event remaining on the Tour - OKI Castellón Open España, Spain (7-9th November).
The first day at Lake Garda saw Woosie finish on par after bogeying the fifth and subsequent bogey and double-bogey at the 16th and 17th holes. The second day saw the former Ryder Cup captain finish 7-under 65 after posting 7 birdies, catapulting the international legend from 23rd to 5th position on the leader-board going into the final day.
Woosnam closed the final day in style with 5 birdies to finish 12-under par 216 overall – one shot behind winner Peter Mitchell from Kent. Woosie commented, “I hit some good shots but not quite enough to catch Peter, he’s really on a roll” (source: BBC News Online).
Forgan team-mate and friend David J Russell (‘DJ’) displayed a gutsy performance in Italy to finish tied 14th alongside Denis O’Sullivan (Ireland) and Bob Cameron (England) on 4-under par 212.
Despite this year being his debut season on the Seniors Tour, Woosnam has achieved unprecedented success with two wins in Poland and Russia and second place finish at the inaugural Casa Serena Open and consistent performances at the US Senior Open and PGA Seniors Championship at Slaley Hall, Northumberland, U.K.
Woosnam will have the chance to seal his Order of Merit title at the OKI Castellón Open, Spain from 7th to 9th November, 2008.
