IIMSAM Marks International Day of Older Persons

Doha, Qatar, October 22, 2008 --(PR.com)-- The Goodwill Ambassador for the Intergovernmental Institution for the use of Micro-algae Spirulina against Malnutrition (IIMSAM), the Permanent Observer to the United Nations Economic and Social Council, His Excellency Dr. Naseer S Homoud has called for ensuring the dignity, respect and well-being of older persons all across the world.

He was speaking while commemorating the International Day of Older Persons. This special event was organized by IIMSAM in a function held at Rumeillah Hospital and Qatari Foundation for Elderly.

International Day of Older Persons is being celebrated all across the world on October 1.

On the occasion, Dr. Homoud visited the both places along with an accompanying delegation of IIMSAM, where a large number of older persons are being looked after. He interacted with them and asked about their well- beings and whereabouts.

Speaking on the occasion, he said a demographic revolution was underway across the globe. Today, world-wide, there are around 600 million persons aged 60 years and over; this total will double by 2025 and will reach virtually two billion by 2050 - the vast majority of them in the developing world.

The Day is an opportunity to recognise the contributions older make to their families and communities, and to encourage participation by older people in community activities. Seniors are, and have always been, an incredible asset. They have helped shape modern Qatar and continue to make significant contributions to society with a lifetime of skills, knowledge and experience, Dr. Homoud added.

He further said that we owe a tremendous debt to our seniors and we should look for ways to improve inter-generational cooperation and understanding. By working together we can improve the lives of our respected older persons and build a richer and fairer world.

Chatting with the older persons at Rumeillah Hospital, Dr. Homoud said that the senior citizens in our society needed care and attention. Acknowledging the significance of contributions made by the elderly to the society, he said that the society should in turn recognise their needs, particularly the emotional needs.

The Goodwill Ambassador commended the role of organisations which brought together the elderly as by bringing people of the same age together, they would provide each other mutual support. He also applauded the role of the State of Qatar to improve the lives of senior persons by way of giving qualitative health services, shelter and fulfilling their inevitable social needs among others.

Senior citizens, during the interaction with Dr. Homoud at Qatari Foundation for Elderly, felt that old age was more than a physical condition; it was a state where one was helpless and dependent on others. They felt that despite old age, senior citizens could still contribute to society. The senior citizens welcomed the move by IIMSAM to take measures for removing this social evil of disrespect in the society.

Dr. Hamoud and his accompanying delegation were welcomed by Mr. Paul Grant, Executive Director and Mr. Mohammed Al- Nuaimi, Executive Director, Media Marketing & PR at Rumeilla Hospital and Mr. Syed Yousef Al- Muftah, General Manager, Qatari Foundation for Elderly.

In a brief speech delivered at Qatari Foundation for Elderly on the occasion by General Manager, Mr. Yousef Al- Muftah said since it was first observed in 1991, International Day of Older Persons has provided us with an occasion for highlighting the tremendous contributions our respected seniors make to our communities. Our seniors are not only responsible for building the country we enjoy today, but also for playing important roles in the ongoing development of our society.

In the fast ageing world, older people might increasingly play a critical role - through volunteer work, transmitting experience and knowledge, helping their families with caring responsibilities and increasing their participation in the paid labour force.

IIMSAM distributed a numbers of gifts amongst older persons.
