Earth’s Population to Drop by 80 Percent, Says Top U.K. Scientist
Many view Dr. Lovelock as the father figure of the contemporary environmental movement. StockInterview talked with Lovelock about his latest book, today’s environmental movement, nuclear energy and uranium mining.
Sarasota, FL, May 25, 2006 --(PR.com)-- “By the end of this century, there is a high probability that the bulk of our species on the planet will be eliminated,” author and leading atmospheric scientist James Lovelock told StockInterview.com. “There may be something, plus or minus, on the order of a billion left.” The chilling future James Lovelock, author of his best-selling The Revenge of Gaia (Penguin Books UK, 2006), portrays may start becoming evident within our lifetimes. “It may be five years or it may be 30 years.”
Lovelock foresees a steep temperature rise, which could make living in the tropical zone impossible. “Within 25 years, most of the global ice in the Arctic will be gone. You will be able to take a sailboat to the North Pole,” he told StockInterview.com.
Lovelock blames fellow environmentalists for damaging the environment while claiming they are saving it, saying “It’s mostly made up of urban people, who know almost nothing about the countryside and still less about the ecosystem. Their solutions are basically urban-political solutions.” He scoffed at their embrace of renewable energy sources, saying, “They continue to insist on wanting to run their cars on bio fuels. This is one of the maddest ideas of the lot.” Lovelock added, “They are being very foolish. They are living in a dream world.”
Instead of championing renewable energy sources, Lovelock has strongly embraced nuclear energy as a key way to helping preserve both the environment and our high-energy consumption lifestyle, saying, “There is no sensible alternative to nuclear power if we are to sustain civilization.”
