About the Author

John Bitter is a retired journalist and public relations practitioner with more than forty years' experience as a news writer, editor, editorialist, public relations practitioner, and professor. In his Masters thesis he explored the reasons people in the education community couldn't communicate with members of the fourth estate. His doctoral dissertation concerned contingency public relations planning.

During the time he was studying and teaching public relations he enjoyed the singular opportunity to meet with and hold frequent discussions with one of the giants of public relations theory at that time, the late Scott Cutlip, and to share his views on the professional aspects of the profession with one of the founders and pioneers of public relations, the esteemed Edward L. Bernays. It was their wisdom that provided a beacon for him in his various public relations endeavors. In their memory he dedicates this work.

He has written scores of articles and papers on communications, and still writes freelance articles for various publications. He has also published a bi-weekly newspaper, and monthly and quarterly newsletters.

Much of his writing and public relations work today revolves around items of interest to senior citizens. He is a member of the Alabama Silver-Haired Legislature, representing Montgomery, Alabama legislative District 74, and is chairman of ASHL Area 9, which includes Montgomery, Autauga, and Elmore counties. He also writes articles for a regional monthly newspaper focusing primarily on information of interest to senior citizens.

During his active years he was a member of the International Association of Business Communicators, Montgomery Association of Business Communicators, Public Relations Council of Alabama, Southern Public Relations Federation, and National Conference of Editorial Writers.
