Book Briefing: Jim Thorpe was one of the most talented and popular athletes of the early twentieth century. Thorpe’s sports career began at the Carlisle Indian School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He became a hometown hero and is imbedded in the history of the town even today. Under the gentle yet persistent coaching of Glenn “Pop” Warner, Thorpe excelled at football and track. He was a phenomenal athlete and his abilities defied his or any other era. It has been said that Thorpe could possibly be one of the best all around athletes of all time. He was the gold medal winner of the Pentathlon and Decathlon events at the 1912 Olympic Games. His glory was soon undermined when it was brought to the attention of The U.S. Amateur Athletic Union that Jim Thorpe had received payment to play baseball in a casual summer league. The U.S. Amateur Athletic Union abruptly stripped Thorpe of his medals and banned him from ever taking part in amateur levels sports again. It was a slap in the face to the level of achievement that Thorpe acquired in his career.
The fascinating theme of the book is centered on a fictional hearing held in the town of Carlisle, PA to decide once and for all the fate of the infamous Jim Thorpe. As you begin to read you will be taken to, a hot summer day in the early 1900’s standing in the back of a Cumberland County Courthouse. The room is packed with supporters and others who are all hanging breathless awaiting the opening statement from the President of The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). As he rises to greet the crowd the potential of his words has the unique ability to rewrite contemporary sports history for ever. It is a riveting tale of passion that celebrates the life of a true American sports hero and contemplates what could have been.
About the author:
Mike Sheaffer was appointed to chair a committee in 1969 called the “Project Jim Thorpe.” The goal of the international organization was to reinstate Jim Thorpe as the 1912 gold medalist in the Pentathlon and Decathlon events. He grew up in Carlisle, PA and feels closely assimilated to the memoirs of this famous athlete. He spent years researching and gathering the facts revolving the unfortunate situation with Jim Thorpe. These facts are used in whole to invent the realistic yet fictional story of the hearing that never was.
The story is a compelling tale that must be told and should definitely be read by all sports history enthusiasts.
