IIMSAM Observed United Nations Day
Doha, Qatar, October 28, 2008 --(PR.com)-- The Goodwill Ambassador for the Intergovernmental Institution for the use of Micro-algae Spirulina against Malnutrition (IIMSAM), the Permanent Observer to the United Nations Economic and Social Council, His Excellency Dr. Naseer S Homoud has called upon the international community to render full support and cooperation to strengthen and democratize the UN to make it more effective.
He made the remarks at a function commemorating the UN Day on Friday marking the 63rd anniversary of the organization here in Doha.
United Nations Day (UN Day) is observed annually worldwide on 24 October to commemorate the founding of the United Nations in October 1945.
In 1945, representatives from fifty different nations gathered in San Francisco to create a document of “far-reaching consequences” - the Charter of the United Nations.
The U.N. Charter went into effect on October 24, 1945.
Speaking on the occasion, IIMSAM Goodwill Ambassador appealed to all Government, celebrities, NGOs and other organisations of the world to come forward with their active and sincere participations to implement UN objectives of solving human problems in all its types and manifestations.
He called upon all members of UN and its all agencies to come out with revised plans and mechanism to deal with all emergent crises like human rights violation, poverty, hunger, malnutrition, global warming, epidemic, and food shortage among others.
He said the Millennium Developments Goals (MDGs) of the United Nations are very unique and ground-breaking achievement by the international community.
Not only did all U.N. member states agree to the MDGs, but it was the first time countries large and small, rich and poor—with the United Nations as facilitator—identified focused, time-bound, measurable and mutually-reinforcing development goals as a framework and strategy for the improvement of the human condition, he added.
Unlike the way in which the internationally recognised days are usually celebrated, with a specific theme each year, there is no specified theme for the UN Day. A major reason for this seems to be the fact that the UN organisations keep celebrating various UN recognised days in different sectors in which UN aims to work – whether it is health, education or human rights.
He pointed out that UN has always been supportive to the millions of underprivileged and distressed people, affected by man-made disasters and natural calamities.
"We shall always believe in the inevitability of the UN, not just to promote peace and passing resolutions but for its various humanitarian activities ensuring new world economic order”, he added.
He hoped that only the UN which is upholding the spirit of mutual respect, honour and cooperation, can help the developing countries achieve their Millennium Development Goals (MGDs).
