This Halloween, Treat Your Family to Oral Health
The Children’s Dental Center of Greater Los Angeles Educates Southland Children About Oral Health & Safety.
Los Angeles, CA, October 28, 2008 --(PR.com)-- 1-800-DENTIST®, the nation's leading free resource for consumers in search of a dentist, will once again partner with The Children’s Dental Center of Greater Los Angeles (TCDC), a non-profit, state-of-the-art dental center for low-income children. The two organizers will provide free oral screenings and education for local families and children at the second annual SMILE-O-WEEN event on Friday, October 31st 2008, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event will be open to the public in an effort to promote periodontal disease awareness to both parents and children. The TCDC Tooth Fairy will distribute “SMILE-O-WEEN Kits” (toothbrushes, toothpaste, oral health tips and information about TCDC) and encourage responsible dental care — especially during the holiday season, when goodies are in constant supply.
According to the Dental Health Foundation, by the time children reach kindergarten, more than 50 percent have dental decay, 19 percent have rampant decay and 28 percent have untreated decay. Recently, the AB1433 law was passed in California, mandating a basic oral health assessment for children attending public school, prior to the completion of their kindergarten year. While the law was a huge step forward in the fight to improve access to regular dental care for all children in the state, there is still a long way to go. The SMILE-O-WEEN event will help raise awareness for this worthy cause and provide free oral health screenings for all children who attend.
“We want to encourage children to have good oral habits for a lifetime,” said Fred Joyal, CEO & Co-Founder of 1-800-DENTIST. “It’s so important for parents and children to know how your mouth affects the rest of your body, we’ve partnered with TCDC to help spread that message.”
“The nation’s number one chronic childhood disease is dental decay,” said Dr. Steven Uranga-McKane, Clinical Director of The Children’s Dental Center of Greater Los Angeles. “Though it is almost entirely preventable, we find too many families waiting for the decay to cause pain before seeking care. Halloween provides a great opportunity to remind children and their parents about the importance of oral health and what they can do to prevent dental disease.”
The Children’s Dental Center of Greater Los Angeles is located in Inglewood, CA. For more information on “SMILE-O-WEEN” or other events at the center, please call Lisa Daggett at 310-419-3000 or e-mail her at ldaggett@tcdc.org.
