Exciting African-American Poetic Voice Emerges in Dark Destiny
Dark Destiny, the starkly truthful, semi-autobiographical poetry collection written by the Rev. Dr. Donald Delano Warner, was recently published by Outskirts Press, Parker, Colorado. Dr. Warner, an ordained minister who is retired from his positions as Red Bank, New Jersey, superintendent of schools and Board of Trustees chairman of Brookdale Community College, Lincroft, New Jersey, shares the stunning details of his life as an African-American.
Philadelphia, PA, May 29, 2006 --(PR.com)-- Dr. Warner spent his formative years in Crestmont, an unincorporated African-American enclave on the outskirts of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A child of the Depression, he saw the men of his community shamed by their inability to provide for their families, and the women take work as domestic servants to provide the day-to-day necessities of life. Inspired by his mother to leave behind the stifling atmosphere of disheartened failure, Warner joined the United States Marine Corps and served in the Korean Conflict. He earned Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees in education and distinguished himself as a teacher and education administrator, retiring from his position in Red Bank, New Jersey and subsequently earning an additional Master’s degree in Christian Education. Among his many honors are the Barringer Award for Educational Excellence from Brookdale Community College, and membership in the Halls of Fame of _Abington High School, his alma mater, and Red Bank Regional High School.
His poetry is inspiring and unsparing. The horrors of segregation walk hand-in-hand with the mysteries of faith and the glories of love. Temptation comes in for its fair share of attention, as does injustice. Readers will find all of these, plus masterful communication of the happiness that overwhelms him from unexpected sources. This is an African-American voice that speaks to readers of all ages and all races.
