Outskirts Press Releases New Book "Mirror, Mirror: Addiction, Recovery, and the Battle Within," by S.M. Keegan

Denver, CO, August 04, 2006 --(PR.com)-- S M Keegan was born into a dysfunctional family, where home was a place filled with alcoholic rage and emotional, mental, physical, and sexual abuse. It was a destructive and painful environment where a broken self-image first showed itself in what would become a twenty-five year struggle with bulimia. After her first marriage at age nineteen, she added diet pills and alcohol to the list, and as her self-loathing increased, so did the substance abuse. Two children, divorce and then remarriage did not lessen the turmoil of her inner world. When the emotional pain grew to a crescendo point, she tried to commit suicide with a drug overdose. This led to therapy, which marked the beginning of her journey to get beyond the addictions, the obsessive-compulsive behavior, and try to come to terms with her past. It also meant trying to build a healthy, peaceful life with the help of her doctor and her loving husband.

Out of her experiences, Keegan has created Mirror, Mirror: Addiction, Recovery, and the Battle Within, a book that offers a straightforward, honest, and painfully revealing account of her life as a child and as an adult, and help for those who are “programmed for addiction.” Her writing is powerful, her observations penetratingly effective. Keegan is a woman who understands that even after twenty years of being clean and sober, a bottle of alcohol cannot be kept in her house. “You will need to figure out for yourself what you can and cannot do, who you can and cannot be around, and be prepared to face your demons every single day.”

Mirror, Mirror: Addiction, Recovery, and the Battle Within is a powerful book that deals with issues of honesty, self-esteem, cross addictions, replacement addictions, guilt and remorse, sex and love, true confessions and lies, behavior justification and blame, getting help, and learning to take responsibility for one’s life and actions.

Written in a conversational style that is winningly accessible, the author is not afraid to confront those who recognize that they are addicted and are willing to take the necessary steps to break free from their addictions. Yet there is humor within the book too, for as Keegan says, “With humor and a sense of purpose, all things are possible.” In speaking of the life of a drug addict, she writes: “In case you don’t know it, there is a difference between going to sleep and waking up, and passing out and coming to. Just thought I’d mention that.”
