Upcoming American Fashion designer Lusmila McColl was invited to take part in the “From Scotland with Love’ exhibition during Tokyo Design Week being held in the Omotesando Hills Centre, Tokyo, Japan. The event runs from October 30th – November 3rd.
Oldwick, NJ, October 31, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Lusmila McColl is one of several designers who were invited to showcase samples from their collection as part of the “From Scotland with Love” exhibition for Tokyo Designers’ Week being held at Omotesando Hills Centre in Tokyo. Lusmila McColl will be representing Harris Tweed Textiles, Inc (USA) to help introduce the fabric to the Japanese public.
The From Scotland With Love exhibition, staged in conjunction with Tokyo Designers’ Week, showcases the tradition and manufacturing excellence of the finest Scottish textile producers and features a number of collaborative works produced jointly with innovative designers. The exhibition is the first in Japan for a number of leading designers from the fashion industry in Europe and elsewhere.
Harris Tweed Textiles (“HTT”) is a small cottage industry located in the Northern part of Scotland, on the Isle of Harris. The Tweed is still a hand-spun and dyed fabric that is made in small mills. HTT (USA), Inc. along with the UK branch of the company, HTT Manufacturing Ltd., is one of three mills that produce tweed from the Isle of Lewis & Harris by employing independent weavers and local community to supply the fabric to the fashion world.
Ms. McColl launched her fashion company, McColl&Clan, last summer. Currently, she designs and produces custom-tailored, hand-made garments using Harris Tweed. Ms. McColl incorporates a design and business ethic that supports a sustainable, eco-sensible and charitable process of producing, distributing, and selling clothing. Harris Tweed reflects her design vision and ethic.
Ms. McColl’s mother is Scottish. The Scottish background offered Ms. McColl the unique opportunity to be the only American designer to represent the Scottish Design contingent at Tokyo Design Week. In a recent visit to relatives in her mother’s homeland of Scotland, Ms. McColl, supported by HTT (USA), Inc. and HTT Manufacturing Ltd., was able to visit the mill facility in Carloway, Scotland, and experience the whole process first-hand.
The trip created new bonds of friendship, admiration and appreciation with the mill workers and the community. The experience cemented Ms. McColl’s objective to assist HTT in accumulating further support, appreciation, and development of Harris Tweed to other modern and eco-focused clientele thru expanding the application of fabric.
This is Ms. McColl’s first ever trip to Japan, and it is a childhood dream come true. “I have always had such a deep interest, respect, and passion for Japan, its people and culture; Especially, their fashion sense. The Japanese have such an amazing natural style. I am also excited to put my Japanese studies into practice!” says Ms. McColl. “For me, I have been making clothing my whole life and I’m just truly grateful and thankful to have this opportunity to support Harris Tweed, Scottish textiles and Scotland.”
Ms. McColl’s Harris Tweed designs will be seen at: Tokyo Design Week, in the Omotesando Hills Centre, Tokyo from October 30th thru November 1st.
