Tampa Sixth Grader to Participate in International Education Panel

Florida Middle School Student Will Represent North America at Kumon’s 50th Anniversary Celebration and Conference in Tokyo.

Tampa, FL, November 02, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Liberty Middle School student Sheela Ranganathan, 11, will make history when she travels to Tokyo in December to participate in an international student panel to discuss education.

The sixth grader is among a select group of students across the world invited to participate in Kumon’s “International Instructors’ Conference”. Kumon, the world’s largest after-school math and reading program, is celebrating its 50th anniversary at the Tokyo Dome. More than 15,000 Kumon instructors, staff and students representing nearly 45 countries are expected to participate in the conference.

Sheela began Kumon at age five and completed the entire math and reading programs before her 11th birthday. She is the first student in North America to achieve this feat before entering middle school. For the past five years, Sheela completed daily math and reading assignments and visited the Kumon center twice a week.

“Sheela is one of few students worldwide who have reached this incredible accomplishment while enrolled in elementary school,” said Kumon North America President Kazu Shibata. “It is quite rare for such a young student to have the skill, ability and commitment to achieve this goal, and to do so takes great effort. Because of this, she has been invited to participate in our global celebration and panel discussion.”

Included in Sheela’s final level of study for the math program were the topics of differential calculus, indefinite/definite integrals and differential equations and interpretation/critique of literature for reading.

Last year, 1,017 students in North America graduated Kumon’s math and reading programs out of more than 200,000.
