Samurai Karate Studio Holds Workshop for Girl Scout Troop
Samurai Karate Studio hosted a bullying and stranger danger workshop for a local girl scout troop on Saturday, November 8th.
Columbia, SC, November 12, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Samurai Karate Studio hosted a stranger danger presentation for a local girl scout troop on Saturday, November 8th.
Sensei Chris Feldt, owner and chief instructor commented, "One of my student's parents is involved with a local girl scout troop and we invited them to our studio to present stranger danger and bullying concepts."
During the presentation, Sensei Feldt covered body language, showing examples of poor body language that represented someone who was afraid and someone who pretended to be really tough.
"The idea is to give the kids an idea of how important body language is when dealing with a bully or a stranger," commented Feldt. "In both cases, the predator is looking for someone who they perceive as being weak and easy to pick on."
Sensei Feldt demonstrated what is good body langauge; walking with your head up, your eyes alert, your shoulders back and your chest out. The other important benefit of good body posture is keeping your head up at all times so that you can be more aware of what is happening around you. "Many times children are confronted by a bully or a stranger, because they weren't aware of what was happening around them," commented Feldt. "I really emphasize the need to keep their head up and run away as soon as they sense trouble."
After reviewing conflict avoidance techniques for bullies, Sensei Feldt reviewed simple self defense techniques that were strictly defensive in nature, for controlling a bully that was looking to hurt their victim.
"During class with my regular students, we discuss the need to avoid conflict at all times, particularly with the strict school rules governing fighting," stated Feldt. "I show the kids techniques that protect themselves and give them the opportunity to run away. None of these techniques are "offensive", purely defensive in protecting themselves and giving them the ability to escape!"
During the stranger danger part of the program, Sensei Feldt emphasized many of the same techniques, but reviewed safe zones and what to do if a stranger attempted to put them in a car.
"This was a great group of girls and we had a lot of fun working with them," commented Feldt. "The girls did a really good job practicing our drills and I really hope they will go home and share this information with their parents!"
If you have a group that would like to participate in a Free stranger danger or bully seminar, please contact Sensei Feldt at 803-462-9425 or email him at samuraikarate@bellsouth.net.
