NISS Celebrates Opening of New Wing with Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony & Open House

NISS celebrated the opening of a new wing to its existing building in Research Triangle Park. The new space nearly doubles the size of the existing building, allowing NISS & SAMSI to conduct more statistical research.

Research Triangle Park, NC, November 13, 2008 --(PR.com)-- The National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS) celebrated the opening of a new wing to its existing building in Research Triangle Park on Friday. NISS held a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house. Nearly 80 people were on hand from academia, government and industry to join in the festivities.

The 11,782-square-foot addition nearly doubles the size of the NISS building. It was designed by O’Brien/Atkins of Research Triangle Park, as was the award-winning existing building, which was constructed in 1997. The general contractor for the addition was Clancy & Theys of Raleigh.

The addition houses NISS’ sister institute, the Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute (SAMSI), and also features a lecture room and commons room shared by NISS and SAMSI.

SAMSI is a consortium of Duke University, North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and NISS. Its mission is to forge a new synthesis of the statistical sciences and the applied mathematical sciences with disciplinary science to confront the very hardest and most important data- and model-driven scientific challenges.

About NISS
The National Institute of Statistical Sciences was established in 1990 by the national statistics societies and the Research Triangle universities and organizations, with the mission to identify, catalyze and foster high-impact, cross-disciplinary and cross-sector research involving the statistical sciences. NISS is dedicated to strengthening and serving the national statistics community, most notably by catalyzing community members’ participation in applied research driven by challenges facing government and industry. NISS also provides career development opportunities for statisticians and scientists, especially those in the formative stages of their careers.
