Piggs Peak Newcomer Walks Away with the R1 Million Pot
As 117 player’s took their seats at the R3,500,000 All Africa Poker Tournament, Evern van Niekerk knew he would have a tough tournament ahead of him to make it to the Final Table. It started with the words “Shuffle up and deal” and culminated in his first time live tournament, being crowned the All Africa Poker champion, launching his poker career on the local poker circuit.
Piggs Peak, Swaziland, November 20, 2008 --(PR.com)-- For his victory, he has earned himself a whopping R1 million first prize, a Samsung sponsored Omina cellphone, as well as his seat on the Team All Africa Poker Aussie Millions 2009 Tour valued at R150,000.
The All Africa Poker Tournament, which was held at Piggs Peak Casino, Swaziland from 13th to 16th November was attended by a star-studded cast of players, featuring poker legend Ray Rahme, AAPT defending champion Darren Kramer, All Africa Poker commentators David Dadic and Ryan Brauer, father and son players – Neville and Ryan Eber, Andre Johnstone, Jarred Solomon, editor of Bluff SA magazine - Jon Stephenson, as well as a number of other extremely well-established poker players.
After the four hour Re-buy and Add-on period, all the players were delighted at the announcement that R25,000 plus an Aussie Millions package, valued at R150,000, would be added into the guaranteed three and a half million Rand prize pool.
However, Evern’s astounding performance was just one of the many historic moments that occurred at this eventful tournament. With a record 8 lady entrants, Melanie Banfield proved that dynamite does indeed come in small packages by confirming that she is one of the best poker player’s in the poker community in her 5th place position. Evern comments on Melanie’s performance as “the only person I could not get a read on.”
Evern played with some good cards which he was paid off for, and by the time he went heads-up with Rudolf Fourie, he had a huge chip advantage of more than double that of his opponent. Fourie, put up an excellent fight, but his short stack got the better of him.
Rudolf went all in, holding an A9, and got called by Evern with
A10. The flop showed 8-5-6, giving Rudolf some more outs, but when the 10 came on the turn and a 9 on the river, his fate was sealed. Rudolf nevertheless earned a handsome R400,000 as well as an Aussie Millions 2009 Package plus a Samsung sponsored cellphone.
