Ultra-High Density Wi-Fi Network Connects Thousands of Users Simultaneously at PDC2008
Xirrus Wi-Fi Arrays Deliver Unmatched Number of User Connections with Minimum Number of Devices.
Thousand Oaks, CA, November 21, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Xirrus, Inc., the Wi-Fi "Power-Play" that delivers the most coverage, bandwidth, and throughput in the industry, announces the successful deployment of Xirrus Wi-Fi Arrays at Microsoft’s Professional Developer’s Conference 2008 (PDC2008) held at the Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC) in California from October 26th through the 30th. The Xirrus Wi-Fi network, consisting of only 16 Wi-Fi Arrays across three large areas of the LACC, delivered high-speed Internet connectivity to thousands of attendees utilizing all types of Wi-Fi enabled devices.
The Professional Developer’s Conference is Microsoft’s premier gathering of leading-edge developers and architects, where attendees come to learn about upcoming products, meet Microsoft’s leaders and top engineers, write code, and be inspired.
“With the operation of PDC2008 came the significant challenge of providing Internet connectivity for thousands of users in highly concentrated areas, including a 100,000 square foot keynote hall,” said Jennifer Ritzinger, Senior Director at Microsoft. “Even with those challenges, Xirrus enabled all attendees to have a seamless and consistent connectivity experience while at the event.”
The Xirrus Wi-Fi network consisted of only 14 XS16 and 2 XS8 Xirrus 802.11abg Wi-Fi Arrays, setting several industry records for Wi-Fi…
Most concurrent users in a single room = 2,890
Most concurrent users per device = 562
Most bandwidth in a single room = 9.7Gbps
“It was a pleasure working with Microsoft. We are proud that once again we were able to successfully demonstrate the ultra-high user density capabilities of our Wi-Fi Arrays, and achieve this in less time and for less money than the competition,” said Alan Amrod, VP of Sales and Marketing at Xirrus. “A wired network would have been impractical, requiring 3,000+ cable drops, a dozen or more high density switches, and several days to deploy.”
“We saw nearly 3,000 simultaneous Wi-Fi connections in the keynote area along with a single Wi-Fi Array exceeding more than 550 concurrent connections – the highest density Wi-Fi we’ve seen to date,” continue Alan. ‘These were not just connections but users actively accessing the web, email, VPNs, etc. What’s more, the ease of deployment and cost savings achieved was significant – Xirrus only required 16 Wi-Fi Arrays, 16 cable drops, and 16 switch ports – the entire Wi-Fi network was operational in less than a day.”
“With our successful deployment at PDC2008, we continue to prove that Xirrus is the only Wi-Fi offering capable of replacing wired desktop switching with Wi-Fi as the primary network connection for Enterprise users – no other offering comes close,” added Alan.

About Xirrus
Xirrus, the only Wi-Fi "Power-Play," manufactures the Wi-Fi Array® architecture that displaces both overlay Wi-Fi offerings and switched Ethernet to the desktop. The Wi-Fi Array integrates 4, 8, 12, 16, or 24 802.11abg+n radios coupled to a high-gain directional antenna system into a single device along with an onboard multi-gigabit switch, Wi-Fi controller, firewall, dedicated Wi-Fi threat sensor, and an embedded spectrum analyzer. The Wi-Fi Array provides more than enough bandwidth, security, and control to replace switched Ethernet to the desktop as the primary network connection. The Xirrus Wi-Fi Array delivers the most coverage, bandwidth, throughput, and support for more users on a per device and per system basis than anything else available on the market today - resulting in a solution that uses 75% fewer devices, cabling, switch ports, power, space, and installation time compared with any other offering.
Xirrus is a privately-held company headquartered in Thousand Oaks, California. For more information, please visit www.xirrus.com.
