MedPro Rx, Inc. Accepting Scholarship Applications
Raleigh, NC, November 22, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Nancy McFarlane, president of MedPro Rx, Inc. (www.medprorx.com), a provider of specialty pharmacy services to clients with chronic illnesses, has announced applications are now open for their “Education Is Power” scholarship program. The annual scholarships are open to United States residents who are living with a bleeding disorder, entering or attending a community college, junior college, four-year college, university or vocational school and are active in their community. Application forms are available on MedPro Rx’s Web site and they must be postmarked by May 1, 2009 to be eligible for consideration. Since starting its “Education is Power” scholarship program in 2006, MedPro Rx has distributed $135,000 to students nationwide who have either hemophilia or von Willebrand Disease (vWD).
People with hemophilia experience bleeding following an injury and may have frequent spontaneous bleeding episodes, often into the joints and muscles. More traumatic injuries may result in serious problems and potential disability. It is largely an inherited disorder, but in about 30 percent of cases there is no family history of the condition and it is the result of a spontaneous gene mutation. Approximately one in every 5,000 males nationwide is born with hemophilia, affecting all racial and socioeconomic groups equally. The three most common types of hemophilia are Hemophilia A or Factor VIII Deficiency, Hemophilia B or Factor IX Deficiency, and vWD. vWD is caused by a deficiency or defect of a clotting protein, and it affects approximately 1-2 percent of the United States population. Unlike hemophilia, vWD occurs equally among males and females and is more likely to cause nosebleeds and bleeding under the skin than into the joints.
