“Grippies” Protective Gloves Offer School Teachers and Nurses Much Needed Assistance in the Fight to Protect Highly Allergenic Children While at School

Eat, Learn, Live (ELL), a not-for-profit foundation that supports the rights of severely allergic children to greater safety in the store-bought foods they eat and safety in the environments in which they learn, are promoting "Grippies" theme-based gloves as an overdue option for better protecting children from inadvertent contact with allergenic substances while at school.

Geneva, IL, November 26, 2008 --(PR.com)-- As the debate continues over ways to better protect allergenic children while attending school, teachers, nurses, parents and students alike are welcoming a new protective glove product called “Grippies”.

While opinion often remains divided on adequate school safeguards for allergenic children including allergy-free tables, “safe snack lists” to school-wide bans of peanut products, most do agree however, that the use of theme-based gloves are a long overdue option for better protecting children from inadvertent contact with allergenic substances capable of threatening a child’s health while at school.

By far, one of the most threatening areas within a school environment is the outdoor equipment on which children often play at recess. Since lunch typically precedes outdoor playtime for hundreds of children having just consumed peanut butter, the food described as causing the most severe, life-threatening reactions. As a result a child’s life may be threatened by simply touching a swing or a monkey bar.

While the availability of products that offer added safety for food allergenic students are short in supply, the need is growing at an aggressive rate. Throughout the recent years, the incidence of food allergy and anaphylaxis has been rising to contribute to a current estimate of roughly 2.2 million school-aged children who have food allergies; 5%-6% of all children. More specifically, the number of American children under five years of age with peanut allergy has doubled between 1999 and 2004.

Studies of fatalities due to anaphylaxis have shown that the majority of cases have occurred outside the home, with a significant number occurring at school. Data also indicates that as much as 43% of food allergic children will have 1+ reactions at school and ~25% of reactions are first-time reactions which places even greater emphasis on vigilance and preparedness within the school environment.

“In addition to diligent hand washing and the avoidance of allergen exposure, Grippies will provide just one additional strategy to be considered when developing a comprehensive management plan for children with severe allergies” explains Stephanie Hack RN, BSN, District 304 Nurse Geneva, IL. She further comments “Grippies appear to be a clever product marketed to supplement the management of allergies in children for use both on school grounds and out in the community.”

The “Grippies” are a unique product that combines fun through a variety of themes to choose from with an added layer of protection for allergenic children. Some of the design categories include “Rock Star”, “Spiderboy”, “Cam-e-o”, “Flower Girl”, “Little Bling”, “Sportster”, “Tiny Dancer”,“#1 Student” and special seasonal/holiday decorated gloves.

“Having spoken to hundreds of mothers who’s children were at risk simply by playing outside at a school play yard or at a computer lab or school library, we realized that “Grippies” gloves may help offer an added layer of protection to the many, many children with severe food allergies” says Kathleen Silverman, creator of “Grippies”. “If our product better protects our children and offers greater safety while allowing them to attend school, then we will continue to work to educate parents, school personnel and children so that awareness of “Grippies” continues to grow. Our child freely wears “Grippies” while attending school as well as other public places such as arcades, neighborhood festivals and parks.”

This holiday season, Eat, Learn, Live (ELL) will be launching a nationwide campaign to sponsor a drive to collect Grippies purchases for schools across the country. ELL will invite corporate sponsorship, celebrity participation and consumer involvement in this important charitable event.

The event will begin on November and run through 2009. For more information, visit ellfoundation.org and read about the “Grippie A Child, Protect A Life” Campaign.
