New Self-Help Book: How to Shed Your Fictional Self and Awaken Your Authentic Self
Bellevue, WA, November 26, 2008 --(PR.com)-- In his Pulitzer Prize-winning book, The Denial of Death, American anthropologist Ernest Becker noted how we all arrive on earth aware of our lonely set-apart-ness, our cosmic insignificance and impotence, and the fact that some day we will die. Outskirts Press author Victor Van Valin has elaborated on Becker’s message in his new release, Casting Out Fear: Shedding Your Fictional Self; Awakening Your Authentic Self.
In an effort to dispel the anxiety generated by our fears of being set apart, insignificant, and mortal, we compensate by vying with one another and/or immersing ourselves in a group in order to prove that we and/or the group, are special, better and superior to others. But such heroics usually fail us. They do not elevate us to the “paradise” of feeling that we have a meaningful role and place in the eternal life and death processes of the universe or assist us in coming to a graceful acceptance of our own mortality. Casting Out Fear details the twists and turns of Van Valin’s own efforts to discover himself and find a path to such paradise. His intelligent, well-reasoned recounting will serve as a useful and easy-to-follow guide for others to find their way to such paradise.
With varying degrees of conscious awareness, we constantly compare ourselves with others. It is vital to our self-esteem to be sure that we have not fallen behind the Joneses. To maintain our place on the social ladder, we look for things about others that entitle us to criticize, belittle, or otherwise look down on them… Most of us are continually and obsessively engaged in trying to do something that entitles us to the admiration and respect of our peers. We do so in order to maintain the pretense that we are truly somebody in the cosmic scheme of things, that some memory of us will survive our death and we will therefore be entitled to claim a sip from the cup of immortality.
