Balfour Beatty Construction Sponsors Integration ‘08 Conference

Company takes leadership role in implementing Building Information Modeling (BIM).

Dallas, TX, December 02, 2008 --(PR.com)-- The huge (estimated at $2-3 trillion) but fragmented construction industry has seen relatively flat productivity growth over the past several decades, and now faces the crisis of an aging workforce. Believing that within the next 10 years Building Information Modeling (BIM) will offer solutions to those challenges and have a revolutionary impact on the building profession, Dallas-based Balfour Beatty Construction sponsored a conference to explore the potential of BIM, titled Integration ’08, on November 17-18, 2008, in Reston, Virginia.

More than 130 Balfour Beatty leaders and key business partners listened as early BIM adopters within the company, along with experts in business and academia, described the dramatic improvements in productivity, profit opportunity, partnership, and processes that BIM offers.

BIM is an integrated process built on coordinated, reliable information about a project from design through construction and into operations. By adopting BIM, architects, engineers, contractors and owners can easily create coordinated digital design information and documentation; use that information to more accurately visualize, simulate and analyze performance, appearance and cost; and reliably deliver the project more quickly, more economically, and with reduced environmental impact.

Delivering the keynote address, architect Phillip G. Bernstein, adjunct professor at the Yale School of Architecture and vice president of Autodesk, described how BIM will fundamentally change how contractors, owners and architects work together to achieve schedule, cost, quality and sustainability goals. Other participants addressed the aging of the construction workforce and predicted that implementation of BIM will attract a new generation of information-agers to the industry.

“The conference was titled Integration ’08 because we wanted to focus on the concept of project integration,” said BBC Washington Division President and CEO John Tarpey. “The industry needs to become more collaborative, and BIM is the platform for such an environment. But BIM is only the technical answer. We also need to understand the behavioral changes needed to capitalize on BIM.”

Conference organizer and BBC vice president Mark Konchar agreed, “The power of Integration ’08 was in the collaboration between Balfour Beatty employees, multiple Balfour Beatty companies and our external strategic partners. The time spent learning with and from each other was a significant step.”
