Joseph R. Bertino, MD, to be Recognized as Outstanding Medical Research Scientist

Lawrenceville, NJ, January 09, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Paul J. Hirsch, MD, Chairman of the Edward J. Ill Excellence in Medicine Foundation, today announced that Joseph R. Bertino, MD, will receive the Outstanding Medical Research Scientist Award for Clinical Research. The award will be presented at the Edward J. Ill Excellence in Medicine Awards® ceremony on May 6, 2009 at the Hyatt Regency Princeton.

The Outstanding Medical Research Scientist Award in the Clinical Research category is presented to an individual who has made important contributions in clinical or translational research leading to advances in disease therapy. Joseph R. Bertino, MD, is a world-renowned medical oncologist and researcher who is internationally recognized for his role in finding curative treatments for leukemia and lymphoma. Dr. Bertino is the Chief Scientific Officer and Associate Director at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey, University Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and the Interim Director of the Stem Cell Institute of New Jersey. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Statesman Award and the Distinguished Service Award for Scientific Achievement from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the Joseph H. Burchenal Memorial Award for outstanding achievement in clinical cancer research from the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR).

-Special Award: Jill A. Lipoti, PhD, for protecting the people of New Jersey from unnecessary exposure to radiation from natural and man-made sources
