ARISE Brings Critical Anger and Stress Management Training to Staff at the Thompson Academy for At-Risk Youth

ARISE Foundation will work with staff of the Thompson Academy to help them learn to manage anger and other harmful emotions while working in a stressful environment.

Pembroke Pines, FL, January 08, 2009 --(PR.com)-- ARISE Foundation will conduct an anger and stress management seminar on January 8th and 9th, 2009, for staff at the Thompson Academy, a residential program for troubled and at-risk youth. The training will take place at 8331 Pembroke Road in Pembroke Pines, FL from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.

With help from a grant provided by the Office of Juvenile Justice & Delinquency Prevention, ARISE will conduct an exciting staff training workshop entitled CHOICES: Drop it at the Door. This two-day, 14-hour workshop is an innovative training that gives participants working with at-risk populations the tools to handle anger and stress through making better choices in their work and personal lives. The training provides a solid understanding of how each one of us can make the choice to drop home- and work-related anger, stress and frustration “at the door.” CHOICES training effectively stops the boomerang effect of stress and negativity, alleviating tension at the workplace and at home. This intense anger and stress management workshop prepares participants to deal with difficult populations. Troubled youth, held under lock and key behind razor wire fences, are often so angry that they lash out at everyone around them. ARISE trains employees of the Juvenile Justice system how to avoid confrontation and altercations by using proven techniques and strategies demonstrated and practiced in this unique CHOICES training.

The ARISE CHOICES: Drop It At The Door training program has been extremely successful in the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice, where it has been conducted in various residential facilities. ARISE has also expanded its CHOICES program to include other government agencies such as police, corrections and probations departments that require employees to confront difficult and often dangerous situations on a daily basis.

Suesanne Oxenberg, a therapist at Thompson Academy, appreciates the control over her emotions that the CHOICES: Drop it at the Door seminar has given her.

“I was able to take away from the training that I am too good to become angry and I am good enough to take control of my anger and let it go,” she said.

Since 1986, ARISE has developed and implemented distinctive Life Management Skills curricula and staff training programs. ARISE continually updates its material, giving it a fresh look and the latest statistics. Designed originally to reach at-risk, incarcerated youth in detention centers and secure facilities, ARISE is also utilized as a powerful prevention tool for teenagers and young adults. Since ARISE was established, the organization has trained and certified over 5,000 instructors who have taught over 4,000,000 documented hours of ARISE life skills lessons in Florida alone. ARISE programs are interactive group discussions and activities designed to break the ice quickly and get even the most reserved participants engaged and involved. ARISE is particularly appropriate for youth with special requirements such as limited reading and/or writing ability. It has been successfully used in the Miami-Dade School System and Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and over 100 organizations in the Disctrict of Columbia, including Washington DC schools, the D.C. Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services and the District of Columbia jail and D.C. Superior Court Probation Officers.

ARISE is also being used in Canada, Jamaica, England, Australia, Bahamas, Bermuda, New Zealand, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Bosnia, Kazakhstan, Central Asia and The Kingdom of Bahrain. The ARISE curricula is presently being translated into Kazakh and Russian for use with orphans. For more information, please visit ariselife-skills.org.
