"Almost:" Coming to Theaters Valentine's Weekend February 13, 2009
Motion Picture Almost aims for big numbers this Valentine's Weekend.
Dallas, TX, January 12, 2009 --(PR.com)-- First time director Laurence Maher aims to knock audiences off their feet this Valentine's Day by opening a surprise release of his new romantic comedy Almost across the U.S. and Canada...against a slate of movies that don't seem to be taking advantage of the season like he is. Going head to head with a studio horror, a studio thriller, a studio drama, and a mini-major studio crime film, there seems to be only one studio romantic comedy opening against Almost on February 13th of this year. So chances are guys and dolls hungry for more Valentine's selection at the box office will be good to this quickly snowballing independent release.
"People in a hurting economy need laughs when they spend time with each other," says the director, "Romantic comedies represent hope, they represent love, they represent the best of what human beings are and can be. They're fun and uplifting and leave two people on a date with warm fuzzys. That's what people need on Valentine's Day. Besides, the girls are picking the movies that weekend, and the guys looking to please won't say no."
Although indeed a romantic comedy, Almost is not without it's crowd pleasers. It has action, drama, and even chase scenes. In fact, viewers see it as a jack of all trades type film, hitting audiences on several levels.
"I was aiming for a movie that appealed to a broad audience," said Maher, "A real feel good flick full of thrills and spills, so even if the guys don't get their blood and guts fix that night, they're still gonna leave the theater jazzed and being glad that's what they saw."
One advantage Almost has in terms of box office numbers is that it's being digitally projected on every screen. Not only are the prints low cost for the distributors, they'll also be scratch and dirt free for the entire theater run. This cheaper method of screening enables the filmmakers to give the theater chains a much greater cut of the profits, which partially explains the amount of theaters clammering to show it.
"I couldn't believe the amount of calls I got from theater owners after the trailer went up," Maher said, "People love the trailer, because it packs a good punch in a very short period of time. And of course, the trailer right now is all over the internet, which is pretty much free word of mouth. That's the beauty of digital. It's so inexpensive. I love film, and will always be a proponent of it and will shoot on it as long as I can, but digital distribution is simply the way of the future. And it enables guys like me to enjoy the same kind of mass release as the major studios. And no theater is gonna argue with the cut I'm able to offer them because of it."
Almost is Amp Entertainment's first major motion picture, a venture that was several years in the undertaking. Amp's intention is for this to be the first of many releases to come, with the idea that some day it will be a major contender as a Hollywood production studio.
The film Plot? This big Hollywood-feel roller coaster is a surreal 24 hour adventure where two freshly broken hearts cross paths at a Dallas train station, experiencing love at first sight just long enough for the doors to close between them. A high-speed romantic comedy sporting action, thrills and tears, this movie will keep you on the edge of your seat Valentine's Day weekend, when audiences across the country will cheer for the heros to reunite, and beat the odds against a city that would Almost not see them live happily ever after.
Fans will be sure to recognize cult movie actress Kinna McInroe, who returns to the big screen this time to pull laugh after laugh as the raging best friend of D. Jade Rigas, the film's heroine.
Starring: D. Jade Rigas, Kinna McInroe, Russell White, Dana McConnell, and Laurence Maher.
