Rewind the Teacher and Ask a Question

Kicking students out of a classroom for their own good: a case for technology.

State College, PA, June 21, 2006 --(PR.com)-- In certain aspects today’s academia differs only slightly from its medieval beginnings. Lectures and quizzes still make up the bulk of educational process. Professor Robert L. Hale of Pennsylvania State University wanted to implement college course more effectively, making the most of student’s strengths, actively developing their independent thinking. The core of the “Analysis and Interpretation of Statistical Data in Education” course created by Prof. Hale is a set of nine DVDs that contain video of lectures, as well as non-video information: links to online quizzes, relevant web sites, papers. DVDs are supplemented by two manuals.

Prof. Hale taught the course in the new format for the first time during Summer Session I at Penn State. The setup allowed to effectively eliminate in-class lectures and pre-frame class debate. It engaged students to learn from vast resources available not only within the courseware, but outside it as well. In the class students could immediately get to the discussion, questions and decision-making part of the educational process, arming them with tools to take out in the real world situations in their field. Interestingly, it worked well for the students with diverse background and abilities. As one of participants put it: “It’s good to be able to rewind the teacher and see the logic of the proof again”. Subjective feelings of successful experiment are confirmed by higher grades earned by the students compared to the previous year. Only thirty one students took part in the first class. Next time it will be offered, enrollment is projected at two hundred students level.

Rapid enrollment growth and changes to a course could not be supported by traditional courseware manufacturing. Along with the innovative approach to teaching the course, Prof. Hale tested new on-demand courseware production service offered by Delta L Printing, a State College media production and a training management software company. Few “bugs” that were found in the course materials during the summer semester are fixed and for the fall semester new materials will be manufactured with the corrected data – a feat impossible with the traditional courseware manufacturing.
