Magnolia Creek and The Eating Disorder Center of Alabama Premiere "America the Beautiful" Documentary in Birmingham

Eating disorder treatment centers join forces to bring powerful documentary and its filmmaker to audiences in Birmingham and other cities across the South. "America the Beautiful" is a socially probing documentary that explores the question, "Does America have an unhealthy obsession with beauty?" Filmmaker Darryl Roberts spent two years to uncover the secrets, the deadly risks, and the strikingly harsh realities of our nation's quest for physical perfection.

Birmingham, AL, January 15, 2009 --(PR.com)-- A documentary that has been gaining worldwide attention for its scathing, critical exploration of America's obsession with beauty makes its way into Birmingham on January 31, 2009 at 7:00pm at the Brock Forum at Samford University.

In "America the Beautiful," filmmaker Darryl Roberts goes on a two-year journey to uncover the secrets, the deadly risks, and the strikingly harsh realities of our nation’s quest for physical perfection. The independent film has been lauded as "a provocative cautionary tale" and "absolutely critical viewing." Famed movie critic Roger Ebert has referred to it as "a film that might rescue the lives of some girls ages 12 and up."

The film's socially-probing message about beauty has resonated particularly within the eating disorder community, prompting Birmingham’s two treatment centers – Magnolia Creek Residential Treatment Center for Eating Disorders and The Eating Disorder Center of Alabama – to mount an effort to bring Roberts and his film to town for a screening and discussion panel.

"I managed to catch 'America the Beautiful' at a conference last year, and it was so thought-provoking and powerful," said Nicole Siegfried, executive director of Magnolia Creek. "I feel honored to be working with Darryl and the EDCA to bring this film to a wider audience."

Magnolia Creek has also teamed up with centers in Tennessee to sponsor screenings and panels in Chattanooga on January 29 and Nashville on January 30.

"America the Beautiful" will screen in Birmingham one night only, on Saturday, January 31, 2009 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at the Brock Forum (Dwight Beeson Hall) at Samford University. Filmmaker Darryl Roberts and other guests will be hosting a special question-and-answer panel after the film. Tickets are $10 general admission and $5 student admission and may be purchased in advance online at www.magnolia-creek.com.
