Toward a Better Politics: Author’s New Book Shows How Compassion Can End Partisan Divide

Fargo, ND, January 17, 2009 --(PR.com)-- It’s one of the biggest political buzzwords. But is “post-partisanship” actually possible? According to a new book by author Jack Schauer, the answer is decidedly “yes.” He examines our current political environment and outlines a way in which bitter rivals can come together to serve the common good in “Politics in Compassion: The Future of American Politics,” just released by Outskirts Press.

At the core of Schauer’s study is the notion of political compassion. Politicians who have it are able to identify with the less fortunate in a way that inspires positive policy change while finding common ground with their political opposites. In scholarly yet accessible prose, Schauer takes a look at past figures who exemplify the phenomena from Jesus and Jane Addams, to Franklin Roosevelt and John Kennedy. And here’s the breakthrough: true political compassion isn’t owned by right or left. Rather, Schauer shows how conservatives, evangelicals, rich and poor can stay true to their ideals while working to achieve goals all Americans agree are in our best interest.

Those goals are a laundry list of some of the world’s biggest challenges race, poverty, caring for the elderly, improving the prospects of our young people. Schauer examines these and more, with an eye toward establishing a framework for action that includes all sides from every political persuasion. While not everyone will be happy with every policy, Schauer shows how emphasizing compassion will end the bitter, partisan fighting of the past three decades. And that means adopting strategies based on their effectiveness, not their political expediency.

“We should realize that there are some situations which might call for a more liberal position or mandate, and other situations that might be best approached from a conservative viewpoint,” Schauer writes. “It is my belief that if political leaders...can decide which type of political belief best serves a particular situation...then it may be possible for both parties to broach specific sentiments and underlying belief systems in an atmosphere of camaraderie.”

Can that really happen? If past is prologue, yes. Further, Schauer shows how the notion of political compassion is also at the root of the growing movement centered around the religious figure known as Maitreya, whose popular message centers around the world’s wealthy finding compassion for the poor.

At a time of new leadership in Washington, Schauer’s book is even more relevant for anyone looking for a roadmap to a more effective government. “Politics in Compassion: The Future of American Politics” is now available through Ingram, Baker & Taylor, Amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com, and the online bookstore of Outskirts Press, at outskirtspress.com/store.php.
