Evansville Martial Artist is Saving Kids
Evansville Martial Artist Jeff Barnes is starting a new program that provides free martial arts training and eduction to 'at-risk' kids in the community.
Evansville, IN, January 21, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The owner of Community Martial Arts and Wellness Studio (www.CommunityMartialArts.com) is on a mission to help 'at-risk' kids in the Evansville area.
Jeff Barnes hovers over his desk, quietly sipping strong black coffee while he is putting the last finishing touches to a Spar-A-Thon fundraiser that will raise money to help kids take the martial arts absolutely free.
“It’s the 800 pound elephant in the room that no one seems to want to talk about,” he quips. “Children are at risk to violence, abandonment, mistreatment, abuse and neglect. No wonder kids turn to gangs, drugs and criminal activity.
"My goal is to present an alternative to drugs, crime and violence for kids by teaching them the martial arts – one that is based on addressing the actual needs of children to feel accomplishment, approval, and a sense of belonging.”
To achieve this end, Barnes has launched a fundraiser and program that he says will dramatically change the lives of children in Evansville, Indiana. “The idea is to raise money and donations so that we can attract at risk kids to learn the martial arts."
And, although the site is only in its first week of relaunch, feedback within the Southern Indiana area has been quite positive.
“The goal of this program is to find alternatives for kids to drugs and crime. I want to help kids have a better future by challenging them to change their lives; I want them to also have a good foundation in self esteem and self discipline that creates a better moral, social, and ethical future for them.”
And, for all intents and purposes, it appears that Community Martial Arts in Evansville is already achieving that goal.
