Rising Star Hosts Olympics in Monterey. Exhibition Features State and Regional Champions.
Monterey, CA, January 22, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Rising Star Gymnastics, the top gymnastics club in Monterey, announced today that it will host its annual Olympics in Monterey Exhibition and Barbeque on Saturday, January 31st from 1:30-4:00 PM at its gym at 2024 Del Monte Boulevard in Monterey. The event is sponsored by Boosters at Rising Star, the non-profit association organized to provide community and parental support to Rising Star’s competitive teams.
Olympics in Monterey showcases the talents of 45 of the most incredible athletes from the Monterey Peninsula. Participants include children and young adults ages 6-15 who compete statewide in USA Gymnastics-sponsored competitions. 15 participants finished in the top 10 in either state or regional competitions in 2008; four placed in the top 3 in their divisions, with many earning first place in individual apparatus.
Boys and girls will participate in all the standard competitive routines. The events will run round-robin, with 2-3 routines performed concurrently by different contestants. The event is an exhibition only. There will be no judges or scoring of routines.
Rising Star gymnasts start training at age 3 or 4. They begin competing in statewide, USA Gymnastics-sanctioned events that are the starting point to an Olympic career as young as six. Gymnasts train 4-5 days/week for several hours a day to gain strength and perfect their skills. They must have the same discipline and focus as much older athletes, since winning at the state level requires an average 9.5 out of 10 points on each event (using the older, 10-point Olympic scoring system). The standards for scoring are the same as at the international level – meaning these children must perfect their skills similarly to those who have already reached Olympic competition.
The Olympics in Monterey showcase offers the local community an opportunity to see their top-ranked gymnastics club in action. Most official competitions for these kids occur at gymnasiums outside Monterey. Olympics in Monterey is the only annual event that brings the team and community together in Monterey to learn about gymnastics and to share in the club’s success.
Adults and children pay $10 per person for both admission and a ticket for the barbeque. Adults who only wish to watch the exhibition pay $5. Kids 12 and under have free admission to the exhibition. Tickets can be purchased in advance at Rising Star Gymnastics or at the door.
The event will also feature a raffle with numerous prizes. The grand prize for the raffle will be an 8GB Apple iTouch. Raffle tickets will cost $5 each or 5 for $20.
