New American Home Shines Light on Solar at International Builders Show

Las Vegas, NV, January 23, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Design Illustrates How Solar Can Be Integrated Into Building Structure.

Home builders, architects, developers, and community designers from around the world will be coming to Las Vegas to attend the International Builders Show being held from January 20 to 23. The future of building design will be on display with the New American Home, built by Blue Heron, showcasing cutting edge energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies, including solar energy systems that warm the swimming pool and generate electricity provided by Suntrek Industries, Inc.

The New American Home serves as the official showcase house of the International Builders Show, NAHB’s annual convention and exposition that draws more than 100,000 attendees. Many new products, materials and construction techniques that become the industry standard are first seen at the show home.

It is a net-zero energy home that includes active solar design (photovoltaic cells), passive solar design (orientation and shading), an insulated concrete wall system, and a revolutionary gas-powered mechanical HVAC system. In addition to state-of-the-art green building technology, the home features dynamic aesthetic design, including fountains, pools and a basement-level subterranean courtyard.

“When we built this home, we wanted to showcase the available technologies that can really make a difference – both to the environment and to the owner’s bank account,” stated Tyler Jones of Blue Heron. “At the same time, we wanted to keep the aesthetics of the home and not clutter it up. So much of the technology is either incorporated into the structure of the home or out of plain sight.”

When thinking of solar energy, most people picture roof-mounted solar panels. While these traditional panels are used on the New American Home, additional semi-transparent panels are built right into the home itself, offering shade for the luxurious patio while using the sun’s energy to help power the home. This type of installation, known as Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) is quickly becoming a popular method of incorporating solar technologies with building designs.

Roy Heine, the CEO of Suntrek Industries, Inc. who installed the solar systems for the home, stated that “people are beginning to see the benefits of incorporating solar energy into their lives. With today’s technologies, we can efficiently create electricity without the harmful effects of traditional electricity generation from fossil fuels. And it only makes sense that the same energy from the sun should be used to heat our water and swimming pools too. We loved being a part of the New American Home project.”

Registered attendees at the 2009 International Builders’ Show can tour The New American Home during exhibit hours. Free shuttle buses depart every half hour from the Las Vegas Convention Center. The home, which is both a show house and a for-sale product, will remain open as a model for 18 months after the show.
