Green Education Foundation Mobilizes 250,000 Students, But Urges Schools to Enroll Now to Reach One Million Student Goal
National Green Week is building a nationwide cadre of committed environmental stewards.
Denver, CO, January 24, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The Green Education Foundation is mobilizing more than one million students to participate in National Green Week (www.nationalgreenweek.com), a free environmental awareness program scheduled starting the week of February 2-8, 2009 and running through Earth Day, April 22, 2009. National Green Week is designed to jumpstart a commitment for environmental education and launch a lifetime of eco-friendly habits in children. This annual event is a replication of highly-successful waste-reduction programs conducted in Walpole and Weymouth, MA. In both cases, students achieved a 70+% waste reduction in classroom trash and promoted new town-wide recycling programs.
To date, 250,000 children from 45 states, Canada, and the Bahamas have enrolled. Schools are encouraged to sign up now at www.nationalgreenweek.com or call 1-888-668-2298 to enroll. If your school cannot participate in the nationwide weigh-in during the week of Feb 2-6, 2009, simply select another week up until April 13, 2009. The Green Education Foundation will consolidate the total nationwide waste reduction numbers and announce them on Earth Day.
Students will pledge to be green keepers and parents are notified to send snacks and drinks in reusable containers during their waste-reduction week. During National Green Week, middle and high school students can also demonstrate their leadership skills by tackling a Green Team challenge or running a green community service project. Educators participating in National Green Week will have access to environmental curricula, interactive forums, and live webinars at www.nationalgreenweek.com.
Wal-Mart Foundation of Colorado and Green Mountain Coffee will be sponsoring several Green In-Action Awards to schools with the most impactful and sustainable environmental projects developed during National Green Week. This competition will showcase individual, class or school-based projects including photos, videos, artwork, reports and/or essays of how they made a difference during National Green Week. Schools registered for the National Green Week program are invited to email their submissions to greenawards@nationalgreenweek.com.
“By participating in National Green Week, students will learn that simple decisions such as the selection of waste-free snacks and drinks can combat monumental environmental problems,” says Victoria Waters, president and founder, Green Education Foundation. “Children are in the best position to impact the future of our environment by developing green behaviors that become lifelong habits,” adds Waters.
U.S. Senator John Kerry recognized the importance of National Green Week and congratulated Fisher’s students, faculty and staff on their efforts towards creating a cleaner environment. The Green School Experiment “is not only effective in reducing waste but it also proved an interactive way for students to learn about the environment,” Senator Kerry commented. “I urge everyone across the nation to participate.”
"Skyway Elementary School is committed to effectively teaching students through the hands-on National Green Week program the valuable lesson of environmental stewardship," commented Pat Webster, principal of Skyway Elementary School in Colorado Springs, CO.
The Green Education Foundation recommends that schools and parents, who would like to participate in National Green Week, sign up immediately at www.nationalgreenweek.com to take advantage of free environmental programs and activities leading up to the event.
