Leason Ellis LLP is pleased to announce that Peter S. Sloane has joined the firm as Chairman of the Trademark and Copyright Practice Group. Mr. Sloane, a former Co-Chair of the Trademark Law Committee of the New York State Bar Association, is an experienced trademark and copyright lawyer, whose practice includes domestic and international prosecution and litigation. He has a broad range of experience in a wide variety of industries including consumer and industrial products, entertainment, fashion, luxury goods, medical supplies and pharmaceuticals.
Mr. Sloane joins the firm as Partner with an emphasis on counseling clients, prosecuting domestic and international trademark applications, and litigating trademark and copyright cases in federal court. He also files U.S. copyright applications, coordinates foreign trademark litigation, handles proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, and tries domain name disputes. He further records trademark registrations with U.S. Customs and Border Protection and advises clients on protection against imported gray market goods.
Mr. Sloane joins Leason Ellis from Ostrolenk Faber LLP, an intellectual property firm in New York City, where he was also a Partner for the past ten years and served as marketing and hiring attorney. Peter was also previously an associate at Fross Zelnick Lehrman & Zissu, P.C.
Mr. Sloane well understands the needs of corporate trademark owners. For instance, during his career, he has served as a secunded trademark attorney at Colgate-Palmolive, where he managed the company’s portfolio of domestic and international trademarks in the toothbrush, oral pharmaceutical and local personal care product categories.
A frequent lecturer and prolific writer, Mr. Sloane has most recently written an article titled “Maintaining U.S. Trademark Registrations: Beware the Corporate Renewal Services Approach,” published in the November 2008 edition of Trademark World magazine. He also co-authored an article with David Perla of client Pangea3, the recognized leader in legal outsourcing, titled “What’s in a Name? Everything,” published in Entrepreneur.com in September of 2008.
With the addition of Mr. Sloane, Leason Ellis continues building its intellectual property practice. “Peter is a strong addition to our trademark and copyright practice,” said David Leason, Managing Partner of the Firm. “He is a dynamic attorney who effectively represents his clients and delivers value to them. He will fit extremely well within our culture and bring new ideas and leadership to the Trademark and Copyright Practice Group,” Leason adds.
“I am very excited to join Leason Ellis,” says Sloane. “They are creating a model boutique for the 21st century. With state of the art technology and without the inefficiencies of older firms, they are well-positioned to effectively serve their clients during the coming years,” he adds.
Mr. Sloane serves on the Executive Boards of Spoken Interludes, a critically acclaimed literary salon, and NameProtect, a subsidiary of Corporation Service Company. He is a graduate of Cornell University and the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University, where he was a member of the Arts & Entertainment Law Journal.
