Chester the Chesapeake
A children's book about a popular retriever: penned by the physician who makes philanthropic rounds.
Sparta, TN, January 26, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Physician author Barbara Ebel inspires Middle Tennessee children to read by writing and illustrating a non-fiction children’s book about her smart therapy dog, Chester, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, and publishing it through Creatspace.
With Chester at her side, Doctor Barbara reads to children in libraries and classrooms. “Because the children love the dog so much,” she said, “it sets the stage for an enjoyable activity. The inspiration to read and a fondness for books is instilled at an early age.”
Because Doctor Barbara is a retired anesthesiologist, she stopped putting people to sleep and instead rewards them with Chester’s wagging tail and amber eyes on dog therapy rounds in nursing homes, retirement facilities, and the various children’s reading programs. Chester has been featured in promotional videos and media articles.
The author used real photos, speech balloons for Chester’s thoughts, and the dog’s first person point of view to tell his story. “The book starts with Chester as a puppy,” Dr. Ebel said. “He relies on his happy home where he can dig, and run, and swim, but realizes the benefits of being a good dog and learning his commands. Life changes for him when other pets arrive at his home threatening his prestigious position, but Chester soon accepts his big brother role and goes on to serve the larger community as a therapy dog.”
Dr. Ebel mentions: “I wrote the book to transcend the pet model. Besides being a warm and fuzzy story about the bond between pets and people, it speaks volumes about the lessons children should learn. And for the delightful preschoolers and first and second graders of Tennessee who inspired me to put Chester in print, it’s icing on the cake.”
Barbara Ebel lives in a rural Tennessee protected wildlife corridor with her husband, two Labrador Retrievers, a cat, and Chester the Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Chester the Chesapeake can be found as a paperback at Amazon.com and as an ebook at most online major eBook distributors.
