Architect Jeffrey R. Zokas, AIA, Named 2009 President of American Institute of Architects Detroit

Several Metro Detroit Companies Also Represented on AIA Detroit Board of Directors.

Detroit, MI, January 28, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The American Institute of Architects Detroit (AIA Detroit) announced the election of Southfield, Mich. architect Jeffrey R. Zokas, AIA, as its 2009 president.

As AIA Detroit president, Zokas will focus on increasing membership value and will explore opportunities to reach out and provide new and improved programs and benefits that impact every member segment of the organization.

Other newly elected AIA Detroit Officers include Raymond Cekauskas, AIA, of Harley Ellis Devereaux (Southfield) as vice president; Bert H. Koseck, AIA, of Neumann/Smith Architecture (Southfield) as secretary; and Jacquelyn Arredondo, AIA, of Berkley as treasurer. Mark Nickita, AIA, of Archive Design Studio. (Detroit) serves as past president.

AIA, Executive Director of AIA Michigan. “As our city continues to work towards becoming more sustainable, we know that he will help advance our mission by promoting the value of good design and emphasizing the role architects have in our evolving city.”

Zokas is a Principal at Harley Ellis Devereaux in Southfield. In this position, he is responsible for the firm’s Higher Education Studio, where he concentrates on the creation of active learning environments. His recent projects include the University of Michigan’s Ultra Low Vibration Laboratory and the Michigan State University’s Facility for Rare Isotope Beams.

Zokas received a Bachelor of Science in Architecture in 1974 and a Bachelor of Architecture in 1975 from Lawrence Technological University and completed graduate management courses at the University of Michigan in 1976. In 1978, he became a licensed architect in the state of Michigan and a member of AIA. He also is licensed in Ohio, New York and Indiana.

Zokas has served AIA in many capacities. His previous AIA Detroit positions include service as a member and chairman of the Professional Practice Committee, Board Member in 2003 and 2006, treasurer in 2007 and vice president in 2008. For AIA Michigan, he has had held responsibilities as a board member in 2003, member and chairman of the AIA Michigan Government Affairs Committee, and served on the Strategic Planning Committee in 2008. He also was Chairman of both AIA Michigan and Detroit’s Membership Committee from 2004-2008.

Outside of AIA, Zokas is a council member for the Society of College and University Planners (SCUP), North Central Region and a member of the Construction Owners Association of America (COAA), Association of Physical Plant Administrators (APPA) and the Michigan Association of Physical Plant Administrators (MIAPPA).

Several members from AIA Detroit also serve on the AIA Michigan Board of Directors. These include Nickita; Cynthia K. Pozolo, AIA of Albert Kahn Associates Inc. (Detroit); Victor Saroki, FAIA, of Victor Saroki & Associates Architects PC (Birmingham); Benedetto Tiseo, AIA, of Tiseo Architects Inc. (Livonia) and Paul D. Tonti, AIA, of SmithGroup, Incorporated (Detroit). Frank X. Arvan, AIA, of FX Architecture LLC (Royal Oak), Paul A. Corneliussen, AIA, of French Associates Inc. (Rochester) and Joseph C. Veryser, AIA, of Lawrence Technological University (Southfield) are AIA chapter directors. Shelli R. Authier, Associate AIA, of Albert Kahn Associates, Inc. (Detroit) is an associate director.
