Poole indicates that the deepening economic crisis has wreaked havoc on employment. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has the U.S. unemployment rate at a staggering 7.2 percent, with the specter of even more losses in the upcoming year. “This is the first time in recent memory when workers are being laid off at the same time entire industries are imploding. Recovery from the job losses could take a decade or more,” Poole says. “There is going to be a massive influx of laid off workers. No amount of extended unemployment benefits will stop the bleeding, and already overburdened yet fewer taxpayers would not be able to handle the massive additional strain.
